Peer Assisted Learning “PAL” (formerly known as Supplemental Instruction “SI”)
Courses identified as having historically high rates of drops, failures, or withdrawals are strategically supported through the integration of Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL). In these targeted courses, faculty are invited to collaborate with our PAL tutor, whose goal is to enhance student academic success by facilitating weekly group study sessions that complement traditional tutoring services.
We encourage faculty to permit periodic classroom visits from the PAL throughout the semester to inform students about the PAAC’s comprehensive academic support offerings, including both individualized tutoring and PAL-led study sessions.
Any course-related materials or resources that faculty can provide will further empower the PAL to conduct effective study sessions and ensure alignment with course objectives.
It is important to note that PALs are not teaching assistants and are not involved in grading or assessment tasks, but rather function as a peer tutor to foster collaborative learning and strengthen students' mastery of course content, outside of the classroom.
معلومات عامة
Both Tutors & PALs are faculty-referred and participate in ongoing professional development.
At all three levels, the Pathways Academic Assistance Center is certified by the College Reading and Learning Association’s International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC).
